Green
Stool
So
your're wondering why your stool color changed from golden brown
to a dark shade of green. The most common causes for green stool
& poop can be attributed to reasons that include:
1.)
FOOD & DIET: The foods we consume can dictate having very
dark to light colored green stool. This usually happens when there
is an overconsumption of specific "green" foods that include:
green leafy vegetables such as lettuce, broccoli, spinach, peas,
green peppers, etc... Don't forget to rule out foods that are highly
processed such as desserts, cookies, food coloring foods, and drink
mixtures. Consuming foods that are high in iron can also cause green
stool in your bowel movements because the body simply doesn't have
the ability to absorb excess iron, thus the body compenstates by
excreting iron salts that give the stool a shade of green. Check
the food label of foods that may be high in iron.
2.)PHYSIOLOGICAL: Green stool can sometimes be attributed to a
change in colinic transit time. Food enters the intestines in a
green color. While it goes through the intestines, it is absorbed
by bile secreted from the body's liver because it absorbs certain
vitamins and fats. It also softens the feces. This process is how
people get brown stool. When food travels faster than it should
through the intestines, it doesn't allow for the feces to be excreted
in a brown color. This isn't normal body functioning, so it leaves
the poop in a green color because it hasn't been broken down by
enzymes. One possible cause of this is an onset of diarrhea.
Other
possible causes can include, but is not limited to: irritable bowel
syndrome, bacteria, crohns, colitis, food poisoning, medications
& laxatives. |
